Maximizing Closet Organization

You complete everything on your to-do list, but you never get around to organizing your closet. This is because it can feel daunting, especially if you have a small closet that’s filled to the brim. Fortunately, closet organization isn’t an impossible task. Here are steps you can follow to organize your closet without spending a fortune on a built-in storage system.

Empty and Clean Your Closet

First, empty your closet. Remove clothes, shoes, accessories, hangers, and other items inside the closet. Then, thoroughly clean the empty closet. Dust and wipe the shelves and hanging rods, and vacuum or mop the floor.
Emptying and cleaning your closet will give you a picture of how much space you have, and you can begin the closet organization process with a blank slate.

Declutter Your Closet

Next, you’ll need to declutter. Closets are short on space, so decluttering will help to make more room for your belongings. Declutter your closet by putting your items into one of these four piles:

  • Keep
  • Sell
  • Donate
  • Trash

Put all items that are beyond repair in the trash pile. Afterward, place the items in good condition that you don’t wear or use in either the sell or donate pile. Finally, decide which items you want to keep. As a rule of thumb, if you haven’t worn an item in the last two years, get rid of it.

However, if you’re finding it difficult to determine what to keep, make an extra pile. If six months go by and you haven’t worn something from this pile,  dispose of them.

Closet Organization to Enhance Storage

Closets provide a limited amount of space. However, there are several ways to maximize closet storage. Some creative ways to improve storage include:

  • Add wall hooks to hang accessories like ties and scarves.
  • Add a small dresser or closed cabinet to make more room for clothes.
  • Using an over-the-door rack to store hard-to-fold items like blankets.

All these options are an inexpensive way to maximize space compared to the cost of getting a built-in storage system.

Categorize and Return Items

Next, categorize your clothes before you put them back in the closet. Group like items together and pick a suitable place to store each item as a group (e.g., fold and store sweaters in a dresser and hang shirts in the closet).

As you organize your closet, put items you don’t often wear towards the back of your closet while keeping those you wear a lot near the front of your closet. Finally, put your accessories and shoes in the closet.

Maintain Your Organized Closet

Now that you’ve organized your closet and ticked closet organization off your to-do list, it still requires maintenance to keep it neat and tidy. Organizing your closet doesn’t end once you’ve put your items back in the closet. It’s a continuous task. Make sure to always put items back in the appropriate place and re-organize your closet at least twice annually to keep it tidy.

Ultimately, a well-organized closet will help you retrieve items faster, save time, and even alleviate the stress caused by frantically searching for things when you need them. Use these closet organization tips to help you organize your closet.
